Mama Shirley
Mama Shirley comes to The Liberated Birth carrying a legacy as rich as the work she embodies. The granddaughter of a traditional midwife who quite literally caught her earthside, she was born into the rhythms of care and community. For many years, she worked within the Department of Aging, walking alongside senior citizens to ensure they had access to the resources they needed for dignity and livelihood.
Her path has always been one of service and sacred witness. As a postpartum caregiver, Mama Shirley carries forward generations of traditional wisdom rooted in the belief that warmth is medicine for the healing body. Whether through preparing nourishing foods, wrapping a mother in blankets, or simply offering presence and prayer, she holds space for families to recover, remember, and reconnect.
At The Liberated Birth, Mama Shirley is our Community Matriarch and Postpartum Traditions Elder—a steady anchor for our growing village. She also serves as Events Coordinator, weaving together spaces of celebration and remembrance, and as Prayer Warrior, grounding our work in faith and ancestral blessing. Her presence reminds us that birth and postpartum are not just medical events but sacred community passages, and that no one should walk them alone.
